How Goldcrests wine came to be…
First, lets go back to the 1970s – a teenage Charlie Willett (owner of Olivers) dreams of growing a vineyard and producing his own wine.
Fast forward to 2022 and he finally achieves his 50 year dream, planting half an acre of Bacchus vines in the beautiful area he grew up in, the Blackwater Valley.
After many months of caring for the vines, we finally have our first harvest in October 2024. The grapes are taken to a local vineyard to be pressed, and the juice is brought back to begin the fermentation process.
After a long process of careful science (and many taste tests!), 2024’s batch was finally bottled and almost ready to be sold!
We have documented the growing, harvesting, production & bottling process on our social media pages – have a watch of the full length video below!
Why Goldcrests?
Goldcrests are inhabitants of the woods that sit adjacent to the vineyard and can regularly be seen around the area.
The Goldcrest is Britain’s smallest bird. Weighing only 6g, its life is spent searching for tiny insects. Its thin beak is perfectly suited for picking out insects from between pine needles which is why they are often found in coniferous woodland, such as can be found in close proximity to the vineyard.
Goldcrests are named after the crest of bright feathers on top of their head, completely yellow in females and orange in males.
The artwork of the goldcrest on the label was done by our talented colleague, Jennifer Humphries
